Midwest Coach on the Roach

Midwest Coach on the Roach

Among the most unpleasant and common pests to invade homes and businesses in Northern Illinois is the cockroach. Regardless of species, cockroaches are associated with filth and unkempt homes. This isn’t necessarily true. Cockroaches happen in clean environments as well. An adult cockroach can subsist for a year on the glue on the back of a postage stamp. Even the most sterile environments provide ample nourishment for a large infestation.

We at Midwest Exterminating would like to let you know that if you suspect these vermin have invaded your home or business, there is nothing to be ashamed of, and you are not alone.  Our exterminators have the experience, training, and knowledge to get your house back to feeling like a home.  While store bought remedies usually cause more problems than they help-only allowing infestations to grow before you break down and call an exterminator- there are some things you can do yourself to identify if you have a problem and work in conjunction with a pest-control professional to rid your home or business of these filthy creepy-crawlies forever.

It mostly goes without saying that roach infestations should be dealt with professionally and immediately. Roaches are more than just a pest, they pose serious health risks.

  • Food Poisoning

Cockroaches are infamous spreaders of disease. Cockroaches carry Salmonella, streptococcus, staphylococcus, and e coli among many others.  As they feed on your food and run across your counters they are leaving these pathogens wherever they go causing food poisoning and illness if allowed to contaminate your food, prep areas, or utensils.

  • Allergies and Asthma

In addition to viruses and bacteria, roach infestations are a major source of allergies and asthma. According to the Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America, cockroach allergy is the most common asthma trigger among urban children.  As roaches eat they constantly regurgitate their saliva onto food and surfaces, they also leave behind feces and shed skins, all of which trigger serious allergic reactions including respiratory distress.

There are three main types of roach that are most prevalent in Northern Illinois, the German cockroach, American cockroach, and Asian Cockroach, though under the right conditions others are possible.  The most obvious sign of an infestation is spotting a roach. This is most often done in the nighttime hours. The most common way to find one is to go into the kitchen at night, turn on the lights, and see one skitter back toward a dark hiding space. Other signs include finding feces, which looks like coffee grounds, dead roaches, or small cylindrical eggs called oothecae. In serious infestations a strong unpleasant smell can be detected as well.
