Stinging Insects
With all of the pleasures of summer in Northern Illinois- picnicking, throwing open the windows, gardening, and barbecuing, come all of the hallmark pests of summer, namely-stinging insects. There are a wide variety of stinging insects in Northern Illinois. Some of the most common to our area such as bees, wasps, hornets, and yellow jackets can do more than be a nuisance, they can cause serious damage to property, and for those unlucky enough to be allergic, prove fatal.

Some simple steps can be taken to avoid being stung.

  • Avoid wearing perfume or cologne- We all enjoy smelling nice. Bees enjoy it too. Forego scented perfumes, soaps, and deodorants when outdoors to prevent stinging insects from being attracted to you.
  • Keep food put away- Have you ever left out a soda overnight only to find it filled with dead wasps the next day? Stinging insects are attracted by the smell. If you are out picnicking, keep your drinks covered to avoid taking a drink and getting a nasty and painful surprise. Keep all foods covered if possible and clean up immediately. Rinse residue out of trash receptacles regularly as well.
  • Wear Shoes outdoors- Many wasps make their nests in the ground, bees are often down low making their way from flower to flower, and if you step on, or too close, they may be provoked into stinging. If you are wearing shoes, the bee or wasp is only going to hurt itself, not you.
  • Dress appropriately-While outdoors this summer try to avoid wearing bright colors and baggy clothing. Bright flowery colors attract bees. Loose clothing can be a problem when a bee or wasp mistakenly gets caught up against your skin inside a baggy shirt or pant leg. Wear snug fitting clothing if possible or keep shirts tucked in.
  • Don’t panic- If a bee, wasp, or hornet lands on you it is only trying to determine if you are a flower. Stay still and whatever you do, do not swat! Once the insect determines you’re not food, only a human, it will fly away.
